Charles Platt

CHARLES PLATT grew up reading science fiction and dreaming about the future. His books are unashamedly positive about the promise of technology, and he is a strong believer in the power of science to enable us to transcend our human limitations.

During the 1990s, Platt moved from being a novelist to being a journalist, and wrote more than thirty features for Wired magazine. This gave him a unique opportunity to explore his interest in technology in the real world. He then established his own workshop in Arizona, where he designed and developed prototypes of medical equipment for a laboratory in California.

Today he mostly writes books introducing people to electronics, but his love for science fiction persists, and the novels that he wrote in this genre still seem fresh and unaffected by the passage of time. Indeed, a startup company in the Bay Area is now developing a process to scan and store the structure of the brain at a neuronal level, in much the same way that Platt predicted in The Silicon Man.

Living in the Arizona wilderness, Charles Platt now uses his workshop to build projects for Make magazine, for which he is a contributing editor and regular columnist.
