Deadly Odds by Allen Wyler is an incredible story about a young man and his precarious path to adulthood. I will go ahead and preface this review with a warning of adult content for potential readers. This book contains a lot of vulgar language. Also, there is a big part of the book that deals with the protagonist's relations with an escort. Now that we have that out of the way, let us jump in! Arnold Gold is a professional gambler and computer genius. In the beginning of our journey, his best friend coaxes him into getting over his fear of women by traveling to Las Vegas to have adult relations with an escort. The logic here is to get sex out of the way so Arnold will be more comfortable around women. Things seem to be going okay until Arnold gives away too much information into his system for betting to the wrong people which puts him on a collision course with a group of terrorists. Buckle up for an adventure full of suspense, intrigue, and geeking out over computer systems. What I liked about this book was the author's ability to make the scenes come to life. Allen did an excellent job painting each scene. Especially the description around the main character's personality. There is a great deal of internal dialog that goes on within Arnold's head that is wildly entertaining. I absolutely loved this book and found it very entertaining! There is only one piece of criticism I have for this story. The scenes in the book do not always change with the chapters, and there is no page distinction of when the scene changes. For example, one paragraph will be in a restaurant with the main character and his escort, the next a conversation between two terrorists that is taking place elsewhere. It would have been much easier if these transitions were noted somehow. It was a little aggravating having to read a few sentences in to notice the scene change. Overall I loved this book. This is the best book that I have read all year. Even with the aforementioned issue with scene changes in chapters, I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars. The book was excellently edited as I did not find any grammar or spelling errors. I recommend this book to anyone who likes action, adventure, and suspense novels. Again, I will caution readers that there adult content and vulgar language used extensively in this book.
